Academics

Brisbane International School caters for the International Curriculum and students are taught and trained to sit for the Edexcel International Examinations. Students are taught a number of subjects of which most are compulsory and some optional. The array of subjects include English Language, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Environmental Studies, History, Geography, Japanese, French, Sinhala, Religious knowledge, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Accounting, Business Studies, Economics and Computing.

BIS will be introducing the "Computer Pioneers" programme in collaboration with Edexcel International and Gateway College from September 2015. This comprehensive computing programme will substitute the current classroom computing syllabus. At the end of each academic year students will be awarded Pearson assured certificates from Edexcel.

All subjects are taught by a panel of well qualified graduates and trained teachers. The following subjects can be offered by a student sitting for London O/levels at BIS. Compulsory subjects: Mathematics, English Language.

The above options are subject to change. Students at BIS are expected to offer a minimum of 7 subjects and up to 9 if possible.

Apart from the O/L and A/L examinations, BIS trains students for the Cambridge young learners and KET examinations, Speech and drama Examinations and the International Assessments conducted by the university of New South Wales, Australia.

Cambridge classes are conducted by BIS and are held every Tuesday within the school premises. Students are well trained and prepared and are allowed to sit for the Starters, Movers, Flyers, and KET examinations on completion of the subject matter.

The International Assessments conducted by the University of New South Wales, Australia are held annually where students are tested on their skills of speaking and writing English language, knowledge of science, computing and mathematics. A number of students have done their school proud by winning gold medals for English Language, Mathematics and Science at the International assessments for years 2005, 2007 and 2009. The other talented students also obtained certificates of distinction and credit.

Many students at BIS, also take part in Speech and drama examinations conducted by the Institute of English Music and Speech (IEMS), the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and the recently included London College of Music (LCM) conducted by the University of West London, U.K. Elocution classes are held in school and are conducted by well qualified teachers. So far the students have passed both local as well as London elocution examinations with flying colours, honours and medals bringing fame to their alma mater.
